Practice and Leadership Development

Practice and Leadership Development enhances the professional satisfaction of Group Health Permanente leadership and medical staff by providing training, consultation, and coaching service needed to provide world class care to our patients.

Setting the stage for success

The complex world of health care can be demanding. It's no different at Group Health. But what is different here is the support offered through the Practice and Leadership Development (PLD) programs.
PLD guides new clinicians through various stages of their careers, whether they are fresh out of residency or a seasoned practitioner. Focusing on three areas--new clinician acculturation, leadership development, and patient-physician communication--our programs are designed to ensure the success of our practitioners throughout their careers with Group Health.

Main Focus Areas:

Associate Program
Clinicians begin their careers at Group Health with the Associate Program--a set of courses that clarifies Group Health values and best practices, introduces leadership, and develops long-term partnerships. The interactive programs meet twice a year and provide opportunities for participants to get to know their colleagues and leaders while learning practical ways to make their work more effective and satisfying.

Leadership Development

Leaders, according to Vince Guaraldi, are made, not born. Making great leaders is the focus of several PLD workshops and trainings. Both new and established leaders will benefit from the skills taught by professional coaches.

Patient-Clinician Communication
Effective clinician patient communication skills are the foundation for excellent medical practice.  PLD offers a variety of skill-based communication workshops for practicing clinicians. These include convenient 1-2 hour modules, all-day workshops or residential programs. Some examples include:
  • Clinician Patient Communication: Using the 4 Habits Approach
  • Talking with Patients about Behavior Change
  • Difficult Clinician Patient Relationships
  • Conversations at the End of Life
